Update on Maritime Electric Rates and the Tourism Industry

In response to concerns raised by tourism operators during the TIAPEI Tourism Conference and Tradeshow, as well as numerous enquiries in the days following the Conference, TIAPEI initiated contact with officials from Maritime Electric and requested clarification on the impact of their proposed rate changes. As you know, Maritime Electric had announced its plan to eliminate block pricing for high use PEI residential customers. As a result of discussion with Maritime Electric, we are pleased to be able to provide you with an information update on this issue.

At TIAPEI’s request, Maritime Electric did a scan of the Tourism operations they have on their books. The scan revealed that most mid size to large accounts, as well as some smaller accounts are commercial accounts and therefore will not be affected by the proposed change. Further investigation showed that all but a handful of smaller Bed and Breakfasts’, cottage operators and other Tourism businesses who are on residential rates do not exceed the lower usage level and therefore would not be affected.

This is the most up to date information we have at present and we have an agreement to continue a dialogue with Maritime Electric on any issues that could impact the Tourism industry. Please contact TIAPEI with any concerns you may have regarding energy costs for your operations so we can better represent our industry during these discussions.

If you have any comments that you would like to share regarding this topic, please contact our offices at 902-566-5008 or email us at tiapei@tiapei.pe.ca.
