PEI Tourism Business Competitiveness Study

Tourism Business Competitiveness Study

In the period of May to July 2009, TIAPEI commissioned Grant Thornton to undertake research into economic competitiveness issues affecting the PEI tourism industry.  The focus of the research was to provide a clear picture of the main issues affecting PEI’s competiveness as it relates to the provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.  The goals of the project included:

  • Engaging industry participants in discussions on what factors are affecting PEI’s business competitiveness.

  • Independent review and analysis of competitiveness brought forward from the interviews.

  • Within the Maritime Provinces, compare the economic competiveness of PEI tourism businesses in the areas of energy, labour, regulation, taxation and other comparative issues.

  • Assess the impact a harmonized tax system would have on the PEI Tourism Industry.

Over thirty TIAPEI members and industry leaders were invited to participate and more than 60% of those invited participated with over 30 hours of one-on-one interviews conducted.  The interview questions were created from information provided by TIAPEI to the consultant and the extensive secondary research in the area of tourism competitiveness across Canada and international destinations.
