June is Tourism Month in PEI
Tourism businesses and leaders in PEI’s tourism industry will be celebrating Tourism Month in June 2012, a special event designed to raise awareness of the economic impact and social benefits of tourism in our community. The Tourism Industry Association of PEI (TIAPEI) is encouraging all Islanders to experience the wonderful products that tourism operators across the Island have to offer all visitors.
“Tourism is a key contributor to our economy, not only on a national level but also right here in PEI,” said Elaine Thomson, TIAPEI President. “Tourism businesses create more than 7,500 full time equivalent jobs and over 1,200 businesses in our region are directly supported by the industry. Islanders need to experience what we have in order to be good ambassadors for tourism and we challenge families to explore their Island and discover the wide variety of activities and adventures found across PEI.”
Tourism Month is a great opportunity to visit the restaurants, accommodations and attractions that are available to visitors from all parts of the globe. Islanders are encouraged to talk to the tourism operators and become familiar with the wide variety of experiences that are offered and better understand the value of tourism in the Province. Familiarization (FAM) tours will be offered to front line tourism employees and are designed to give tourism employees and operators the opportunity to experience first-hand the products and services the Island has to offer.
Tourism is a $74 billion industry in Canada that directly supports 617,300 jobs from coast to coast. This represents 9.2% of all jobs in Canada and makes tourism the third largest job creator in the country. On PEI, tourism is one of top three industries which generates over $368 million in revenues and represents 6.88% of the total GDP.
